Residency Program

The program is tailored to each resident's strengths and weaknesses and is designed to produce a solid foundation in the provision of pharmaceutical care, practice management and essential skills. Upon acceptance to the residency program, each resident will complete a self-assessment form where they identify their strengths and any areas where they want or need more exposure. Utilizing required and elective learning experiences, the program is tailored to each resident. View a sample resident training plan.

Core Rotations

Required, core rotations usually last four to six weeks and consist of:

  • Practice foundation skills/orientation
  • Internal medicine
  • Family medicine
  • Critical care
  • Surgery
  • Pharmacy management
  • Ambulatory care
  • Infectious disease

Longitudinal learning experiences take place during the year and consist of:

  • Pharmacy Practice Experience
  • Emergency Response
  • Teaching
  • Research
  • Pharmacy Informatics

Elective learning experience options include:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Oncology
  • Pain Management/Palliative & Hospice Care
  • Geriatrics/Long-Term Care
  • Behavioral Health
  • Residents may choose to do a second rotation in any of their previous learning experience areas as an elective; however, a maximum of 3 rotations are allowed within a specific patient population or practice area

Pharmacy Services

Pharmacists at UKSC provide quality distributive and clinical pharmaceutical care. As a licensed pharmacist, residents will actively be involved in distributive functions (via their staffing component) and will be expected to gain proficiency in providing clinical services.

Clinical Services at UKSC consist of the following:

  • Pharmacokinetic dosing
  • Vancomycin, aminoglycosides, fosphenytoin, etc.
  • Systemic anticoagulation
  • Weight-based IV unfractionated heparin dosing and monitoring
  • Warfarin dosing and monitoring
  • Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) dosing and monitoring
  • Argatroban dosing and monitoring
  • TPN/PPN nutrition support
  • Pain management
  • Medication counseling
  • Medication reconciliation assistance
  • Drug information
  • Drug therapy newsletter

Jeffery “Cole” Hollifield, PharmD, joins UK St. Claire after graduating from Marshall University School of Pharmacy in May 2024. Cole is originally from Princeton, West Virginia and attended Concord University where he obtained his undergraduate degree in Chemistry with a minor in Biology. His professional interests include ambulatory care and internal medicine. His personal interests include spending time with family and friends, working out, and hiking outdoors with his dog.
