UK St. Claire Celebrates the Retirement of Carolyn Moore, MD, After 29 Years of Dedicated Service

“I’ve known I wanted to have a career in healthcare since I was a small child,” said Carolyn Moore, MD, UK St. Claire (SCH) Primary Care Physician.

Dr. Moore followed a medical path that led her to 29 years as a physician at SCH. A native of Virginia, she graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in 1974 and attended the Medical College of Virginia (Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine) in Richmond, Virginia, from 1975 to 1979. She completed her residency in Columbus, Ohio, with the Grant Family Practice Residency at Grant Hospital and served as the program’s assistant director for a year after her graduation in 1982.

After returning to Virginia, Dr. Moore worked as an emergency medicine physician at Montgomery County Hospital in Blacksburg before transitioning to a public health clinician at the New River Valley Health Department. Over the next several years, she worked as a family practitioner in Mint Spring, practiced emergency medicine at King’s Daughters Hospital in Stanton, practiced family medicine and obstetrics with a private practice in Bedford, and was a public health clinician in Lynchburg.

“I really enjoy delivering babies, so when the practice in Bedford stopped doing obstetrics, I reached out to a physician search firm to find somewhere else to continue my career. They matched me with St. Claire,” said Dr. Moore. “I had always moved at least every five years my whole life, but this area kept me for over 28 years.”

Dr. Moore moved to Morehead in 1993 and joined the St. Claire medical staff as a family practitioner at the Olive Hill clinic. Throughout her career, she has been an active member of the medical staff and served as Chair of the Department of Medicine from 2003-04 and 2014-15.

Dr. Moore is just as passionate about educating our future healthcare providers as she is about caring for her patients. She was recognized for her commitment to education with the Eastern Kentucky AHEC’s Preceptor Award in 2008, the Outstanding Mentorship Award in 2014, and also won the 2018 Family Medicine Faculty Teaching Award. Dr. Moore plans to continue her work with the University of Kentucky’s Rural Physician Leadership Program during retirement.

“I’ve always enjoyed teaching and appreciate the opportunity to continue to work with students,” said Dr. Moore.

Over the years, Dr. Moore has poured passion and dedication into the ministry at SCH. She has served the community well and will continue to dedicate her time to the future of St. Claire. Join us as we wish her a happy and enjoyable retirement!
