Morehead State Basketball fans broke out their white fan gear in support of lung cancer awareness at Tuesday’s Men’s basketball game against Kentucky Christian University.
UK St. Claire (SCH) and UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network (MCCAN) partnered with Morehead State Athletics to host the “White Out” game to share the importance of lung cancer screenings. Many fans enjoyed complimentary game tickets, a free t-shirt, and the opportunity to explore the mega inflatable lung exhibit presented by the Kentucky Cancer Program (KCP).
“The inflatable lung exhibit is an interactive display that caught the attention of fans of all ages last night,” said Brittany Blair, APRN, SCH Oncology Clinical Director. “It gives a visual of what healthy lungs look like and prompts visitors to ask questions about how to keep their lungs strong and healthy.”
Lung cancer is the second most common cancer and is prevalent within our community. Screenings for lung cancer could save 12,000 lives just in the U.S. this year. You may qualify for screening if you:
- Are between the ages of 50 and 80.
- Have a smoking history of at least a pack a day for 20+ years.
- Are currently smoking or stopped smoking within the last 15 years.
“Lung cancer is often detected when it’s too late,” said Blair. “We recommend anyone that qualifies for screening to do so at least once a year.”
Low-dose CT scans can be performed to detect lung cancer. Talk with your healthcare provider about getting a referral to be screened. SCH’s Diagnostic Imaging Center offers low-dose CTs at St. Claire Claire Regional Medical Center until 5:30 PM Monday through Friday. To request an appointment with a UK St. Claire provider to discuss being screened for lung cancer, call 606.784.6641 or visit www.st-claire.org/appointment.
