The UK St. Claire (SCH) Foundation bestowed the St. Claire Signature Award to Thelma Johnson for dedicating her life to the service of others during its annual Signature Event on Nov. 19.
“She is filled with the love of God,” said Bonnie Bennett, SCH Volunteer. “I truly believe that she had the calling on her life that she wanted to dedicate her life to service of others.”
Johnson began her career at St. Claire in 1994 as a payroll clerk. During her time at SCH, Johnson held many different positions including Payroll Officer, Accountant, and Director of Volunteer Services. Before retiring from UK St. Claire in 2014, Johnson helped bring the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to Morehead, which provides opportunities for people 55 and older to remain active in the life of their community. She has volunteered for over 26 years and more than 12,000 hours as a RSVP.
“Thelma embodies all of the qualities of the RSVP volunteer and we would not be able to continue our mission without her,” said Helisha Tuerk, Associate Director, RSVP at Morehead State University. “She is making the world a better place and we are so delighted to recognize her and congratulate her on this award.”
Johnson is also known for her work with the Elliottville Baptist Church Food & Clothing Pantry and her service on the Morehead Community Federal Credit Union Board for 20 years where she helped nurses receive fair financial independence. She also helped implement the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Morehead, an adult learning program for adults over 50.
“She truly is a gift to St. Claire and to the community,” said Brenda Bennett, SCH Volunteer. “We consider it an honor to have worked with Thelma because she truly gives back without expecting anything in return.”
Thelma continues her calling to give back by volunteering at UK St. Claire and the Elliottville Baptist Church Food & Clothing Pantry.
